As a result, his plea deal was renegotiated. However, Jennifer Marcum was never found. Kimball’s information led investigators to the bodies of LeAnn Emry in Utah’s Book Cliffs, and Uncle Terry near Vail, Colorado. He agreed to lead them to Jennifer Marcum, Terry Kimball and LeAnn Emry in exchange for reduced charges. Now that investigators had recovered Kaysi McLeod’s remains, they negotiated a deal with Scott Kimball. Grusing was right, and the confirmation was a turning point in the investigation. “Based upon what Scott had said, based upon the receipt, based upon the godforsaken place this hiker was recovered, I had a really good notion it was Kaysi,” Grusing said. Grusing called the Forest Service and learned that a hunter had recently found a skull on the ground in the area. While executing a search warrant of Kimball’s belongings, Grusing had found a receipt for a grocery store in Walden, Colorado, which is surrounded by National Forest land. During his years of killing, he was known in the community for appearing as Pogo the Clown at local charity events. Investigators already knew that Scott Kimball said he had been hunting on the day Kaysi McLeod disappeared. John Wayne Gacy, also known as the 'Killer Clown', was an American serial killer and rapist who sexually assaulted and murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men between 19 in Chicago, Illinois. “Scott was trying to get time in federal prison because it’s easier life for him than in state prison,” Grusing said. Investigators got a break in the case while questioning Kimball about the disappearances, and he mentioned the possibility that one of the missing women might be found on National Park Service land. It wasn't until we started looking at his criminal history and piecing things together that we could see that each individual agency had no idea what they were really dealing with,” said Gary Thatcher, chief investigator with the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, who was investigating Kimball for check fraud. “Nobody saw a big picture of who Scott Kimball was. Scott Kimball also was connected to two more missing people, his own uncle, Terry Kimball, and LeAnn Emry, the ex-girlfriend of another one of Kimball’s former cellmates. "Both Rob and Bob tell my boss that Scott Kimball took their daughters." "Rob McLeod and Bob e into the FBI office in November 2006," former Special Agent Johnny Grusing told ABC News. Rob McLeod had reached out to Bob Marcum after seeing a news article about Jennifer Marcum’s disappearance that mentioned Scott Kimball as being the last person to see her alive. On January 2, 1972, 16-year-old Timothy McCoy got up early to make his host breakfast. Despite being convicted and serving time for sodomy in 1968, Gacy established himself as a. Kimball's web of lies and manipulation finally unraveled in 2006, when the two fathers of those missing women went to the FBI. One of the worst serial killers in American history, John Wayne Gacy performed as 'Pogo the Clown' by day and murdered young men and boys by night. For serial killer John Wayne Gacy, normalcy was camouflage. Kimball explained that he worked for the FBI and was using his contacts to look for Kaysi. Not only did Kimball deceive the FBI, but he also deceived Lori McLeod, the mother of one of the missing girls, Kaysi McLeod.

Rain affects Evan’s business more than others, he said, because two of three attractions are outdoors.īut good crowds have still come through the indoor haunted house, he said, and he and VanGilder aren’t in it to make much money anyway. The owners make a profit, he said, but it isn’t much. On a good day, Evan said the entire operation will make $3,000. Many of their props are made from VanGilder’s old farm equipment. Their attractions cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to build, Evan said. The duo employs about 90 actors from local colleges and high schools for the season. His business partner, 60-year-old Rick VanGilder, funds the operation. Ken Evan, 53, co-owns Slaughterhouse Adventure and the Grand River Corn Maze at 5781 W. “That’s why we started doing this,” he said. Sometimes, he gets to put on a mask and revisit what got him in the business over three decades ago. Now, Terebus spends the off-season reconfiguring parts of the haunt and installing new scares. “It was a lot of work,” Terebus said, but buying a building and rebranding helped. Eventually they went looking for a permanent location. Each year, they added more trailers to their “haunt,” which moved around Metro Detroit every year. Their four-floor attraction is massive compared to the brothers’ first attraction in 1981 - a haunted trailer. New this year is a $50 VIP ticket that allows visitors to skip the typically two-and-a-half-hour line. Layman enlists around 25 volunteers as actors, and pays for security.Īt Erebus, patrons shell out $23 for a weekday romp through the four-floor attraction, or $28 on Fridays and Saturdays. He expects to see more than 10,000 visitors this season, each of whom pay $15 to walk through the haunted house at 20900 Dequindre. “I got into it with the intention of making it a business,” he said. The attraction has started to make more money the last few years, he said, but he hasn’t quit his day job as an electronic technician. Layman, 36, said The Deadland, a decade-old permanent attraction, brings in over six figures. It’s one time you can just let it all out, man, be what you want and nobody’s going to say anything.” “You don’t have to go visit nobody, you don’t have to buy presents for anybody. “Halloween is the coolest holiday,” the 53-year-old said. From 2005 to 2009, it held the Guinness World Record for the largest walk-through haunted attraction. Visitors wander just under a half-mile through Erebus, which is contained within a warehouse nestled behind the Crofoot Ballroom in downtown Pontiac. Terebus, who runs the four-floor haunt he opened with his brother, Jim, in 1998, wouldn’t say how much money the operation pulls in every season, but he said the attraction does well enough that he and his team can work on the haunt year-round. “Operational costs are huge,” he said.Įrebus opened this year for its 17th season. Perry costs about $1,000 an hour to run during the peak season. Ed Terebus, co-owner of the Erebus Haunted Attraction in Pontiac, estimates tens of thousands will pay for the privilege of being frightened at Erebus this season.Įrebus employs hundreds of actors, make-up artists, security guards and ticket-takers. Show attempted pass plays to run plays and see how non-dominant they were. Huge passing yards means the team is behind in second half. If a book was written and sold on it, I’d read it. He was/is too classy to spill the beans on what (in his view) really happened. Man Bowels and Leftwich must have really hated each other by the time it was over. And run plays, compared to what we all just suffered through, this guy’s probably going to look like the second coming of Einstein! Who knows, he might even be capable of scheming them open for a change. And since Canales had a pair almost as good around, he should surely know how to use them the right way. No matter the background of the starting QB in the coming season, it’s likely he’s never had this caliber of weapons to work with. Joe you didn’t mention Evans & Godwin both missed games. Mike and Chris give me something to watch in the upcoming disaster that will be Toad’s Bowels’ last season in football. Johnson isn't a must-start WR by this point, but the volume remains strong enough for him to be in that WR2/3 range for me. Maybe it was just a fluke, or maybe he just has a bit of a better connection with Mitchell Trubisky than Kenny Pickett he has a 61.4% catch rate and 6.1 Y/T from Trubisky, compared to 57.4% and 5.4 with Pickett. He's mostly still garnering his typically strong target numbers, and in Week 14 he actually started turning them into production. The coin flip has come up tails a bunch of times in a row, but I still think heads have a pretty good chance of popping up here.Īgain, "trust" is the wrong word, but yeah, I think I'd be rolling with Johnson this week. That's frustrating, but the opportunities are still there - 7.8 targets per game over the past five - and he only needs to hit on one to be worth starting. Evans is a downfield-oriented playmaker, playing in an offense that is struggling to give its quarterback time, and he and Brady have just been a little bit off more often than not lately. It seems like every week he's inches away from a big play - in Week 14, it was a long touchdown nullified by a holding penalty plus a potential late touchdown thrown behind and below him in the end zone. He hadn't had more than 59 yards in a game since Week 8, either, which means he really hasn't been very helpful for Fantasy for like two months. Jeudy is very much in the starting conversation, especially if Sutton's hamstring keeps him sidelined, but he's still more of a fringe WR2 than a must-start guy.Įvans hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 4, a stunning drought for a guy who had 27 touchdowns in his first two seasons with Tom Brady. Don't let the three touchdowns convince you this was some paradigm-shifting performance - and don't let Russell Wilson's struggles fool you into thinking his absence wouldn't be a downgrade. However, it was also just 73 yards on a 20.5% target share, in a game Courtland Sutton missed against a pretty good matchup. Obviously, it was a massive game - three touchdowns, 33.3 PPR points, and his third highest yardage total of the season. Week 14 was an interesting one for Jeudy. Before we get to my Week 15 rankings for wide receiver, here are my thoughts on three of the biggest questions facing the position this week: But there are still plenty of questions out there. Brown is a superstar, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett remain must-start WRs, and Christian Watson's upside is too high to consider sitting, for instance. Heading into the Fantasy Football playoffs, some things are guaranteed. The Music Perception article cites an earlier study that found that Studies have also shown that the Western preference for even, symmetrical rhythms is a learned behavior. North Americans, they found, had difficulty producing complex metrical patterns-even those with, as the article specifies (kind of amazingly), "high amounts of tapping experience and music training." Their tapping frequently stretched out to resemble something more like an even beat. The authors of the Music Perception article conducted a study in which participants were asked to tap along with recordings of drum patterns played over Balkan folk melodies in irregular meters, then continue tapping out the rhythm once the drum pattern was turned off, then in the absence of both the drum pattern and the melody. "Irregular" time signatures are anything but unusual in other parts of the world-some musical cultures from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Balkan Peninsula commonly use metric structures that don't follow the same set of rules as Western music, according to an article called "Synchronization and Continuation Tapping to Complex Meters" for a 2006 edition of Music Perception: An Interdisciplinary Journal.īut people raised in North America often have a particular trouble with irregular time signatures. Time signatures like these are often known as "irregular," "complex," or "asymmetrical" time signatures. For example: Try clapping along with the original Mission: Impossible theme, which is also in a 5/4 time signature. (Hence the title.) When there are five, seven, eleven, or almost any number of beats in a measure that doesn't divide evenly into twos or threes, the beats can become non-isochronous-meaning the emphasized beats, the ones you would tap your foot along with, aren't evenly spaced. "Take Five," though, is written and performed in a 5/4 time signature, as my jazz-fan colleague David Graham mentioned yesterday-meaning there are five beats per measure. As Justin London, a music professor at Carleton College, puts it in " How to Talk About Musical Metre," "Western music theory, from the 19th century through Lerdahl and Jackendoff (1983) has presumed meter to be inherently isochronous." In other words, when you tap your foot to a common piece of Western music, be it one by Katy Perry or Tchaikovsky, your taps will have regular time intervals between them. Most Western music is dependent on a structure with two, three, or four beats in a measure-or some multiple of those-with even spaces between the emphasized beats. TO THE NAKED EYE, IT MAY APPEAR THAT: Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, who died Wednesday, will be remembered for recording one of the most beloved jazz melodies of its era: 1959's distinctive, serpentine "Take Five," which was written by Brubeck's collaborator Paul Desmond (well, maybe it was a joint effort) and performed by their band, The Dave Brubeck Quartet.īUT ACCORDING TO SOME EXPERTS WHO THOUGHT REALLY HARD ABOUT THIS: There's another reason why the popularity of "Take Five" is remarkable: It's performed in a musical structure that people in the Western world often show cognitive resistance to. Influenced by Bulgarian and Turkish street rhythms that they experienced while on a State Department tour of Eurasia, Brubeck and Desmond played with incorporating the 9/8 syncopation and minor keys they heard while overseas. It has been used in dozens of films, tv shows, theme songs, and remains one of the most played tunes on jazz radio stations. Originally released in 1959, it was two years later when they re-released the song that it took off and remains the biggest selling jazz single of all time. Jazz is the most originally American style of music and if there is a jazz tune that everyone identifies with that genre, it is “Take Five”, written by alto sax man Paul Desmond and performed by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Look, I’m a beer drinker not brew master who makes poetry out of a review. Each beer includes a brief description from either Ancient Fire Wines or directly from the brewery. The list is divided into two sections autumn and winter. Two are from my own scourings of online reviews of what I’d like to try. I went through Jason’s entire list and pulled out the spice-infused beers AND on what’s available through Thanksgiving. In November many autumn craft beers are reaching the end of their release period and buzzing about the winter season. (Good times at the AFW household, dontcha think!?) Here’s the scoop. As it turns out, he just wrapped up a 2-part Autumn beer shoot-out where he and his wife tasted their way through 16 (yes…SIXTEEN) autumn beers and highlighted the top four. To help me compile a list of worthy spicy holiday beers I turned to Jason at Ancient Fire Wines for advice. He’s an award-winning wine, cider, and beer maker and I knew I was in good hands. Holiday beers excel at celebrating the season of spice. And every year, breweries across the nation love to help us to do exactly that. After the trial, Riley robbed her bank and stole military-grade guns from a warehouse before going off the grid. She then forces the clerk to give her his car, but she at least gives him money for it.Ĭarmichael and Beltran meet with fellow Detective Inman (Annie Ilonzeh), as they suspect Riley to be behind these killings, seeing as how it is the five-year anniversary of Chris and Carly's murders. Riley pistol-whips the guy and orders him to not ever drink again and to be a good father, or she will find him since she saw his ID and remembers his address. She notices the boy's father is drunk, and as they get off the bus, the man enters a liquor store while his son waits outside. On the bus, Riley meets a young boy, and she gives him a toy that she swiped from Stevens' home. Riley hops on a bus and then detonates the rope, blowing Stevens up. She makes sure he remembers her, and she tells him that the rope he's tied up with is explosive. Riley goes to the home of Judge Stevens and ties him up after beating him and nailing his hands to the table. In the present day, Carmichael meets with his partner, Moises Beltran (John Ortiz), as they find the bodies of the three killers hung upside down from a ferris wheel. Riley is being wheeled away to a psych ward, and Carmichael hops in to join her in the ambulance, but she grabs an oxygen tank, whacks Carmichael across the head, and then runs out of the ambulance, disappearing. Riley snaps and tries to attack the gangbangers, but she is tased by the bailiff, and the killers laugh in her face. Judge James Stevens (Jeff Harlan) rules against Riley's favor and lets the killers walk. Riley is brought in to testify against the gangbangers, but Henderson tries to use the medication thing against her by saying her memory was hazy or that she is mentally unfit to remember them. He also notices some medication that Riley is taking, but she forces him out of her house. Later, as she is packing up Chris and Carly's things, Riley is visited by an attorney, Henderson (Michael Mosley), who attempts to bribe Riley into dropping her testimony against the criminals that he is representing. She recognizes all three of them by their face tattoos. Riley is brought in to identify the gangbangers. He tells Riley that the suspects have been apprehended, and he gives Riley the photo booth pictures she took with Chris and Carly. Riley wakes up in the hospital and meets with Detective Stan Carmichael (John Gallagher Jr). Riley gets shot as well, but she manages to make it to the bodies of her husband and daughter. As Chris and Carly walk back toward the car, three gangbangers drive up by them and shoot them. The Norths enjoy their evening at the carnival and end the night with ice cream. Garcia orders his guy to follow Chris right before he decapitates Mickey. Garcia is in the middle of torturing Mickey, who was apparently trying to steal from Garcia with Chris's help. He calls his boss, cartel leader Diego Garcia (Juan Pablo Raba). The family leaves, and they are watched by a gangbanger. As they head out, Chris calls Mickey to tell him he's backing out of the deal. Riley decides not to let Carly stay sad, so she suggests they all go to the Christmas carnival. Riley goes home for Carly's birthday party, only to find her and Chris disappointed because nobody showed up thanks to Peg, who spitefully threw a holiday party and invited all the other kids, but left a voicemail just to taunt Riley and Carly. Riley then goes to work at her bank and is told to close even though it's Carly's birthday. Later, Riley and Carly stop to visit Riley's husband/Carly's father Chris (Jeff Hephner), who, unbeknownst to Riley, is arranging some kind of shady deal with his coworker Mickey (Chris Johnson). We flashback to five years ago where Riley was with her daughter Carly (Cailey Fleming) after getting into an argument with another girl scout's mother, Peg (Pell James), who complains to Riley that they were selling on their turf. She goes through her belongings, and out falls a box of girl scout cookies. She enters her van where she tends to her leg wound and has a drink. Riley goes to an impoverished neighborhood where she hides out. Riley asks if he remembers her, but he simply responds with "Fuck you" before Riley blows his brains out. She gains the upper hand and holds a gun under his chin. Riley North (Jennifer Garner) is fighting a gangster who slashes her leg with his knife.
